How to Clean PVC Foil Doors and Cabinets: A Care Guide

Walnut-pattern interior door wrapped in PVC foil

With the right care, PVC foil doors and kitchen cabinets keep their colour and texture for many years. Care is not difficult; what matters most is avoiding a few habits that can damage the surface.

How should everyday cleaning be done?

  • Use a soft cloth: A slightly damp microfibre or cotton cloth is enough to remove dust and marks.
  • Mild soapy water is enough: For stubborn marks, add a few drops of liquid soap or a pH-neutral detergent to lukewarm water.
  • Finish by drying: Drying the surface with a dry cloth after wiping prevents water spots.
  • Follow the texture: On wood-grain surfaces, moving the cloth along the grain gives a cleaner finish.

What should you avoid?

The following products and methods can dull, scratch or discolour the foil surface:

  • Acetone, thinner and solvent-based cleaners
  • Bleach and products with a high alcohol content
  • Powder detergents, abrasive creams and steel wool or hard scouring pads
  • Steam cleaners and water left standing on the surface

Heat and steam: the biggest thing to watch in the kitchen

PVC foil is sensitive to high heat and prolonged steam. That is why the fronts right next to the oven, hob and dishwasher are the parts under the most strain.

  • Use heat shield strips: Heat shield strips fitted to fronts next to ovens and built-in appliances keep hot air away from the foil.
  • Do not open the dishwasher too early: Wait a few minutes after the programme ends before opening the door; the hot steam that escapes can damage the worktop edge and the fronts next to it.
  • Do not run kettles or coffee machines under wall cabinets: Rising steam can gradually cause the bottom edge of wall cabinet fronts to lift.

Remove the protective film after installation

In protective-film series, the surface is covered with a thin clear film so it is not scratched during production and transport. This film should be removed once installation is finished; if it stays on for a long time under sun and heat, it becomes harder to peel off and may leave marks on the surface.

The right surface makes care easy

In busy kitchens, matt surfaces that resist fingerprints make care even easier.
