Choosing Bathroom Cabinet Doors: Moisture-Resistant Surfaces and Pattern Ideas
A bathroom cabinet and its doors are tested every day by steam, splashing water and frequent temperature changes. A cabinet made with the wrong materials soon shows lifting at door edges and swelling in the carcass. With the right choices, bathroom furniture stays as good as new for many years.
What wears out bathroom furniture?
- Steam and condensation: Moisture after a hot shower lingers on surfaces, especially in poorly ventilated bathrooms.
- Splashing water: Door and worktop edges around the basin are the places most often in contact with water.
- Exposed edges: Unprotected cut edges of MDF absorb water and swell.
The right carcass: moisture-resistant MDF
Moisture-resistant MDF (usually green in colour) is recommended for bathroom furniture, as it takes on moisture much more slowly than standard MDF. For carcass joints, a water-resistant D3 or D4 class adhesive should be used. To learn more about adhesive classes: What are D1, D2, D3 and D4 adhesive classes?
The advantage of PVC foil on doors
A PVC foil surface does not absorb water and cleans easily with a damp cloth. Its real advantage is that membrane pressing wraps the face and edges of the door in one piece. With no edge-band joint, there are fewer weak points where water can seep into the MDF.
For a long life, it is important that the doors are pressed with membrane press adhesive at the temperature the manufacturer recommends. For the steps involved, read our membrane pressing article.

Habits that extend the life of a bathroom cabinet
- Ventilate the bathroom after a shower, or run the extractor fan for a while.
- Wipe away water around the basin straight away.
- Do not place the cabinet too close to the shower, where it would be hit directly by water.
- Avoid abrasive and solvent-based products when cleaning.
Frequently asked questions
Does a PVC foil bathroom cabinet let water through?
The foil surface itself is waterproof. What determines the cabinet’s life is the carcass material, the adhesive quality and whether the doors are pressed correctly.
Can a lifting bathroom cabinet door be repaired?
Lifting foil and swollen MDF are usually permanent damage; the right fix is to have the door remade. For the causes, read our article on PVC foil lifting.
